Music education for every child- Ideal or reality?

Picture
"The economic factor is frequently the key element that makes the implementation of this idea impossible, and makes music education available usually to children with better social status, i.e. music education is dependent on the parents’ financial situation. This idea will be fully implemented into practice only when we raise awareness about the significance of music education, not only for the children and citizens, but for the progress and prosperity of the entire society. Music sensitizes, enriches and affects the development of the child’s creativity and universality. Only that kind of person can contribute to the creation of a better, more progressive, more humane and happier society, for the benefit of us all. "-Sušić, BlaŽenka Bačlija
Journal of Elementary Education / Revija za Elementarno Izobraževanje; mar2017, Vol. 10 Issue 1, p85-97, 13p

This research is very important because it points us to the obvious students from wealthier households have access to better educational opportunities. This will make it very difficult for students without high quality training to be competitive. I agree with the author that stronger music and music education programs would increase progress and prosperity for society.

Diversity and representation in orchestras

The League of American Orchestras conducted a report of research and data analysis. This was among the key findings:
" The proportion of non-white musicians represented in the orchestra workforce – and of African American and Hispanic / Latino musicians in particular– remains extremely low."
How can we make orchestras a more inviting place for young black and brown musicians?

Yale declaration for equity in music for city students

Picture
"A student’s access to an active music life should not be dependent on zip code, socioeconomic status, racial or ethnic background, country of birth, or language spoken at home."
"An active music life means creating, performing, and responding to music in a variety of settings. It is characterized by:
  • Accessible, sequential, and robust music instruction in schools
  • Outside-of-school opportunities that provide services that schools do not provide
  • Informal music-making (at home, at places of worship, with family and friends, etc.)
An active music life requires all three contexts. Many students in city schools enjoy rich informal music lives but are not offered sequential music instruction in their schools or substantial out-of-school music opportunities."

Forte Strings seeks to make music education more equitable in Jackson, MS, by providing our students with out-of-school music opportunities.
